Gov. Doyles Back to School Gift for UW Students
Students Face 19% Rise in Tuition and Increasing Living Costs
Madison
As the fall semester commences at the University of Wisconsin
system schools, in state students are greeted with an outstanding 19% increase
in tuition! This comes with a special thanks to Gov. Jim Doyle, who by allowing
for the hike, rescinds on a campaign promise and further hinders the financial
situations of students.
The bloated increase paradoxes a campaign promise Gov. Doyle made in a debate
last fall, where he explicitly stated that he would not raise tuition by
more then 10%. Now, he may defend the 19% rise, citing the infamous $3.2
Billion budget shortfall. However, this very same deficit did not stop him
from allocating funds for the ratification of state employee contracts and
other areas in his original proposed executive budget. Placing the interests
of students second to special interests, the governor shows his true dedication
for education.
The Governors budget succeeds in being even more student unfriendly
with the property tax freeze veto. The city of Madison has experienced a
surge in property tax rates in recent years. One can only imagine the tax
hungry Madison city council will continue to follow past trends.
Many UW Madison students, in and out of state, tenant off campus housing,
where rent prices are excessive, and with any property tax increase, the
out of control rent will further continue to skyrocket. For in the past,
rent increases have gone hand in hand with outstanding hikes of property
taxes. So as in the past, students will continue to suffer when landlords
raise rent fees to help compensate for losses due to escalating property
tax rates. It is obvious, Gov. Doyles signed budget is a far cry to
how he appeared so student friendly last fall.
In using the rhetorical words of our unfaithful governor, It is a New
Day in Wisconsin, where with tuition increases and unavoidable in suing
local property tax hikes, college students face a boundless barrage of increases
in living expenses. |
